Interview with Makeup Artist- Nnanna Ivy Amaka, CEO NIA ARTS

Hi guyssssss,

welcome back to my blog, i know its been a while.

so today, i decided to do something different, i realise that most people especially upcoming makeup artists (students) don’t really know how to get around the whole business of juggling studies and work and also how to improve on it, which is why i interviewed a makeup artist who is also a student that is doing quite well for herself.

Amaka is a good friend of mine, my coursemate and also a self taught talented makeup artist and i get to witness how amazing she is. so lets just move straight to the interview

Hi Amaka

Amaka: Hi Feyi

What is your full name and the name of your makeup brand?

Amaka: My full name is Amaka Ivy Nnanna, and the name of my makeup brand is NIA which stands for Nnanna Ivy Amaka

How old are you and where are you from?

Amaka: I am 21 and from Abia state

How long have you been a makeup artist?

Amaka: hmm, that one had gan🤔, technically i started in ss1 after my brother’s wedding when i had makeup on me for the first time, so since then i have been playing with my face

so lets say six years?

Amaka: yes six years in all but professionally, four years.

wow, okay, so what made you delve into makeup of all areas?

Amaka: The fact that when they did makeup for me, i didn’t look ugly again, cos growing up i always thought i was ugly until i had makeup on and realized am a fine babe. so i started doing makeup on myself until someone gave me a positive comment and i decided to focus on it.

How do you juggle makeup and studies together, has it been hard or easy for you?

Amaka: It’s just been there because most times people do makeup on the weekends, so i don’t really have to choose between school and makeup

In your opinion, what is the most important quality a makeup artist should have?

Amaka: patience, makeup can drive one crazyy, Jesus christ 😌, i rememer the first time i tried putting on lashes, i cried because i just couldn’t get it right and it was pissing me off, like i watched so much youtube videos but they are so much different from actually putting them on and it was so hard. i just needed to calm down, i even got glue in my eye self and i was so angry but i kept going because i said i must get it.

What makeup brands can you not live without?

Amaka: hmm, i don’t know o, i dont think there is literally anyone i can’t live without for now because i am still trying on different products because its not everything i can afford, and the ones i can afford, i am still trying to play around with them so i don’t have a favourite yet.

Do you still see yourself doing makeup in 5 years?

Amaka: yess, that is all i know to be honest, if i didn’t find makeup, i don’t know what i will be doing with my life.

Okayyy, so its safe to say its your calling. what and from whom, do you get your inspiration from?

Amaka: i get my inspiration from my friends because they are always there whenever i am doing makeup cos sometimes i get frustrated whenever i am doing something and i don’t like it cos am a perfectionist, so they are always there to help me out and calm me down.

What are some tips and tricks to a flawless makeup skinwork?

Amaka: Blend. blending is key and the products you use is very important so know your products and blend. Take your time and be patient.

What is your opinion of a quick yet classy look because of those times you might be too busy or in a hurry?

Amaka: Nudee, nude is life, i love clean nude makeup yunno. justs set your eyes, set your concealer on under your eyes, contour nicely and then pop on some lashes. you don’t need to apply eyeshadow because thats work. instead of using powder highlighter you can use cream highlighters under your foundation so it looks natural and seamless. And maybe two or three pumps of those glow sprays, it helps you glow from within your skin and help you look like a brown piece of tweeks😄.

Have you ever faced any opposition from your family members?

Amaka: ah when i first started, my dad was totally against it , he was like “i am not going to allow you to do makeup” but now he supports me. you will always face opposition from your family members as long as you are a Nigerian because most of them believe that its only doctors or lawyers e.t.c that brings money but at the end of the day, they will support you because they have no choice but to.

How do you stay abreast of the latest beauty trends?

Amaka: i follow top makeup artist like bibyonce for the glossy not matte look , o my God😊 seun williams for the total badass looks, i love her makeup die, whenever i am looking for skinwork, i go to flawless faces by jane on instagram. (check them out on instagram) . There are just so many good makeup artist .

Has the school environment affected your business in anyway?

Amaka: light is a huge challenge for me because i can be seriously doing somebody’s makeup with a time crunch and they will just take light especially in the midday. and then backgrouds too is a problem because there isn’t a lot of choices to choose from and we aren’t exactly allowed to be creative with it .

What is your advice to young makeup artist that are just starting out?

Amaka: hmm.. am still a young makeup artist that is still starting out and my own advice to myself and everyone out there is perseverance because i keep strugling with when i do something and feel its not good enough to post or too lazy and find excuses to stop myself from posting it because i just dont feel its good enough. another thing is courage and patience, yunno courage to be patient with themselves. i remember when i used to be disrespected and told that my makeup is not worth the price i collect but here i am now, you need to know your standards don’t let anyone disregard your makeup.

Thank you so much for taking time out for this interview
